Saudi Arabia has been going under revolutionary transformations almost in every sector. This wave of change has been started on June 21, 2017 when King Salman removed Mohammed bin Nayef as interior minister and crown prince, and appointed his son, Mohammed bin Salman, as the new crown prince. Under Mohammed Bin Nayef, who oversaw Saudi Arabia’s counterterrorism response after 2003, the Interior Ministry waged a campaign of repression against peaceful Saudi dissidents and continued to impose burdensome travel restrictions on Saudi women.
The new leader’s ambitious 2016 plan, Vision 2030, to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy is a major shift from traditional approach to modern approach of planning and development though it failed to incorporate important human rights reforms, like strengthening women’s ability to participate in the labor market etc. However, analysts are expecting gradual transformation in other aspects.
On the occasion of declaring ‘Vision 2030’, the crown prince declared –
“We are determined to reinforce and diversify the capabilities of our economy, turning our key strengths into enabling tools for a fully diversified future. As such, we will transform Aramco from an oil producing company into a global industrial conglomerate. We will transform the Public Investment Fund into the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund. We will encourage our major corporations to expand across borders and take their rightful place in global markets. As we continue to give our army the best possible machinery and equipment, we plan to manufacture half of our military needs within the Kingdom to create more job opportunities for citizens and keep more resources in our country.”
We see the change in Leadership which is instrumental in steering the growth and development of any organizations, influencing significantly on employee performances and other benchmarks and Key Performance Indicators like sales or revenues, profit, asset and market value of the company.
Leadership style, owing to globalization, geopolitical and geo-economic ambitions under Saudi Vision 2030, and advancement in Information technology has undergone notable changes and evolved as being digital and inclusive in nature, rather than being transformational, transactional or autocratic. There has been a sweeping hype of transformation toward being digital and inclusive for the companies in the petrochemical, industrial, construction, service, finance, banking, health, education, real estate, agriculture and tourism sectors.
The current changes in the leadership indicates that these elements of the leadership are being digital and inclusive in nature. Considering the concept of leadership today is different from old style of leadership the variables can be attributed to the elements of digital and inclusive leadership which is fueling the development of the enterprise in terms of sales, profit, asset and employee performances and the development of an enterprise is conditioned by certain factors.
Now a days, with the new wave of change in the national level, the high performing companies of Saudi Arabia also consider leadership development programs as a strategic need. The companies are preparing their leaders to their switch to digital transformation and inclusive leadership, focusing on the various leadership development programs run internally and jointly.
The companies are going through a transitional phase towards becoming digital and inclusive and the year 2018 can be well defined as the year of digital transformation for the high performing companies in Saudi Arabia.
Leadership development program is important for these companies as a strategic need, as it brings about a cognitive change among the leaders upfront to think and act differently. Leaders being digital-ready can imagine the digital future and create new opportunities. With courage, curiosity, cultural intelligence, collaboration, they can perform with agility and brevity, understand the risk factors, take risk and rethink leadership model for innovation and growth.
If the leaders who are the core pillars of the enterprises are adept in performing like a digital and inclusive leader they are prepared for success.
